Methyl chloride is a chloromethane compound in addition to methylene chloride,
chloroform and carbon tetrachloride. Methyl chloride or chloromethane has a
wide range of industrial applications used in the production of resins, elastomers,
silicones, and the production of agricultural chemicals (herbicides). The average
methyl chloride import demand data in 2018 – 2022 is 1,648 tons/year with an
average increase of 16.58%. The need for methyl chloride is estimated at 5,630
tons/year by 2028. The methyl chloride plant is planned to be established in the
Cilegon Industrial Estate with consideration of easy access to raw material
sources, water supply, electricity supply, and other needs. The production of
methyl chloride is carried out by reacting methanol with hydrogen chloride which
is referred to as a hydrochlorination reaction. A mixture of methanol gas and
hydrogen chloride is reacted in a multitube fixed bed reactor at a temperature of
300°C and a pressure of 3 atm resulting in a yield of 90 – 95%. The methyl
chloride plant will operate continuously 24 hours for 330 days/year with 129
employees.
