Flouted Maxims in Cruella Movie: A Pragmatic Study

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the different tendencies between the protagonist and antagonist characters of Cruella movie in flouting maxims. This research is a qualitative research. This research uses Grice’s cooperative principle and Brown and Yule’s context of situation theory as the approaches. The data are the utterances of the protagonist and antagonist characters in Cruella movie. The data of this research are taken from the internet website. The results show that there are 29 utterances that contain flouted maxims. They consist of 17 utterances of the protagonist character and 12 utterances of the antagonist character that contain flouted maxims. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that both the protagonist and antagonist characters mostly flout the maxim of relation. Besides, they have different tendencies in flouting other maxims to achieve certain goals. Maxim of manner is identified as the most flouted maxim after the maxim of relation by the protagonist character and maxim of quantity is identified as the most flouted maxim after the maxim of relation by the antagonist character.
