The thesis tries to analyze and dismantle the issue related to the construction of orientalism which was carried out by The West against The East represented by white people and black people. It is constructed in the novel through the black characters' experience of being white slaves in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).
This research was conducted because there is a gap between the West and the East (racism, colonialism, and the practice of apartheid) which is contained in the novel and in fact it has been happening since then until now. To support this research, the theory of Orientalism by Edward Said is used because this theory focuses on how the West views the East.
The type of this research is a qualitative research which is using two types of data in the form of primary data and secondary data. The primary data used in this study were taken from the dialogues and narrative events contained in the novel. While secondary data is taken from journals, articles, websites etc.
The result of this research is the found of the construction of orientalism in the form of stereotypes and the oppression of black peoples as the east in Southern Rhodesia. This relates to the western goal to show their dominance and power. In addition, it was found that the author's position as the third person in the novel shows her tendency toward West idea. In other words, The Grass is Singing can be interpreted as the form of the author’s agreement with orientalism. | en_US |
| dc.description.abstract | This thesis, studies Orientalism constructed in the novel The Grass is Singing by Doris Lessing. Doris Lessing is a British writer born in Persia who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2007. As a white writer, Lessing is known as a writer who fights for the black community. Still, in this novel, she sharpens the negative image of blacks as described in the theory of Orientalism. Orientalism focuses on how West’s view of the East. Orientalism was carried out by The West against The East, represented by Mary Turner as white people and Moses as black. This study aims to dismantle the Orientalist discourse in the novel. The study applied the theory of Orientalism by Edward Said (1979). The discourse of Orientalism in The Grass is Singing is constructed in the form of stereotypes and oppression against black people in Southern Rhodesia. Racism, colonialism, and the politic of Apartheid done by white people in the novel showcase the white superiority toward the inferior black. | en_US |
