The Analysis of Flouted Maxims of The Selected Episodes on Defending Jacob Movie Series Subtitle
Abstract
This research is conducted to analyze the flouted maxims done by the main characters in Defending Jacob movie series. The aims of this research are to find out the kinds of flouted maxims by applying Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle theory as well as to figure out the factors that influence the main characters to flout the maxims by applying the Context of situation theory by Halliday (1985). This research employed qualitative research method and the data of this research were from the main characters’ utterances. The researcher found that there are 19 utterances contain of flouted maxims according to Grice’s (1975) Cooperative Principle theory then the data were analyzed and interpreted by using Context of situation by Halliday (1985). The findings showed that 19 utterances contain flouted maxims namely; 5 utterances belong to flouted maxims of quantity, 4 utterances belongs to flouted maxim of quality, 8 utterances belong to flouted maxim of relation, and 2 utterances belong to flouted maxim of manner. The researcher also showed the factors that influence the characters to flout the maxims. The factors are showing emotion, ending the conversation, hiding the truth, avoiding the topic, giving speculation, uncertainty,
feeling suspected, diverting the conversation and does not straight to the point.
