The Comparative Analysis of English Code-Mixing in Economic and Business Section Radar Media Online Newspaper: A Study of Sociolinguistics
Abstract
This research discusses English code-mixing in the news media in East Java. In addition, this research compares two research objects, Radar Jember and Radar Surabaya. The purpose of this research is to find the type of code-mixing, the reason, and the motivation of code-mixing in editor writing. The method used is qualitative research. Then, the data collection technique was taken on 1-31 January 2023. This research used interviews to gather information from news writing. In addition, the data was analysed using descriptive and interpretative. The results show that English code-mixing in Radar Surabaya media has many types of code-mixing rather than Radar Jember. There are several reasons of code-mixing in Radar Surabaya media such as the influence of respondent, prohibition of using Indonesian language, the newspaper is only read by businessman. Conversely, Radar Jember is only read by general people and the influence of local language that affects code-mixing. The motivation of Radar Surabaya is to has proximity to the readers, indirectly giving character to the readers, and English gives positive influence so that it creates a good image to media. However, Radar Jember is motivated by the society that uses mixed language so that it has an important role for the society thus, it is easily accepted. Therefore, code-mixing has an important role in language and communication aspects hence the cause of code-mixing is influenced by social, cognitive and various linguistic factors.
