AN ANALYSIS OF FLOUTED MAXIMS IN WHAT THE FIT : A PRAGMATIC APPROACH
Abstract
This study focuses on the flouted maxims produced of Kevin Hart’s utterances in
What The Fit when he did a conversation with the guests of the show. There are 13 utterances
from Kevin Hart used as the data. The types of flouted maxims produced in Kevin Hart’s
utterances are being the first research question. In addition this study also identifies the
implied meaning of the utterances. This study applies the theory of cooperative principle by
Grice (1975) in order to find the flouted maxims and the theory of context of situation by
Halliday (1985) in order to reveal the implied meaning of the utterances. Descriptive
qualitative reseach is the type of this research since the data are taken in the form of words
from the conversations (utterances) between Kevin Hart and the guests in What The Fit on
LOL Network on YouTube. The data are taken from Kevin Hart’s utterances. The results of
this study show that there are all types of maxim are produced by Kevin Hart when he
interacted with the guests of What The Fit. Kevin flouted maxim of quality 1 time, maxim
of quantity 3 times, maxim of relation 7 times and maxim of manner 2 times. Maxim of
relation becomes the most flouted maxim in Kevin Hart's utterances. In his utterances, he
generates an implied meaning towards the guests’ questions or utterances.
