Speech Acts Analysis of the Main Character in Frozen Movie: A Pragmatic Study
Abstract
This research applies pragmatic approach based on Searle’s theory,
dealing with speech act as the main tool to analyze the data. In this research, the
source of data is the movie script entitled Frozen. This research is aimed at
analyzing the kinds of speech acts uttered by Elsa to other characters. The
utterances are analyzed by using speech acts theory which is proposed by Searle
(1979).
This research employs a qualitative method. Regarding the method, this
research uses qualitative research method as the main approach. The approach
is combined with the documentary research strategy since the source of the data
of this research is in a form of written text which is downloaded from
(https://www.imsdb.com/scripts/Frozen-(Disney).html). The data which are in a
form of dialogues are analyzed with the speech acts tool to classify the types of
each utterance.
The results show that there are 32 utterances and 5 types of illocutionary
acts within her dialogues. Those 5 types of illocutionary act are classified into
representatives, directives, commissive, expressive and declaratives.
