English Compound Words on Online Vogue Magazine: A Morphological Analysis
Abstract
This research applied types of compound words theory proposed by Bauer
(1983) to analyse the pattern’s combination of the compound words. Furthermore,
theory of meanings of the compound words by O’Grady (1997) is used to find out
the meaning of the compound words. This research aims to find out the
combinations that created the compound words and to describe the meanings of
the compound words elucidated in the sentence from the selected article on Vogue
magazine.
The data of this research were the compound words taken from an article
on online Vogue magazine entitled Gal Gadot on life, love, Wonder Woman
1984– And How She and Her Family Are Coping With Crisis. To collect the data,
every compound word was underlined in the article to find the patterns that
created the compound word. The collected data were sorted out based on the types
of compounds by Bauer (1983). Then the selected data were verified using four
main dictionaries and two supporting dictionaries to find out the meaning of the
compound words.
The result of this study shows that compound nouns are more productive
than compound adjectives in the magazine with the percentage of 78%. Whereas
there are no compound verbs found on the magazine. Furthermore, the most
dominant type of compound words meaning is endocentric compound. Therefore,
most of the compound words meaning can be identified from the meaning of each
word.
