| dc.description.abstract | Treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) not only affects the patient but also the
family who is responsible for the patient. Family needs are important to be
studied so that families are able to carry out their roles well. It is possible that
family characteristics can influence the priority of family needs. This study aims
to describe the relationship between family characteristics and the needs of the
patient's family in the hospital intensive care unit. This study uses a literature
review narrative method. Search articles using three databases, namely Spinger,
Science Direct, and Google Scholar published from 2015 to 2020. The selection of
articles uses a PRISMA flowchart by entering inclusion and exclusion criteria.
The results of the literature analysis show that the fulfillment of family needs is
carried out by health workers when explaining the patient's condition, family
relationships, needing reassurance, culture and religion related to closeness, as
well as families who are married and live at home with patients related to comfort
and support. The conclusion is that the family characteristics are mostly women,
adults, not undergraduates, Christians, as children and partners of patients with
married status and living at home, various occupations, one of which is a nurse,
and African ethnicity. The most important family needs are information and
reassurance, followed by closeness, comfort and support regarding opportunities
to visit patients, hope of recovery, communication with health care providers,
health care providers provide the best facilities and care. Other factors related to meeting family needs are participation, support, treatment, current events and
