Abstract

The shipbuilding industry is required to increase productivity to meet the needs of increasingly competitive market. However, in the ship production process, various wastes are still found that cause low efficiency in the use of materials and production time. This study aims to optimaze ship material productivity through the application of lean manufacturing concepts using the value stream mapping (VSM) method. The literature review in this study refers to lean manufacturing concepts, seven waste identification types, as well as analytical approaches such as the waste relationship matrix (WRM) and value stream mapping. The research method used the quantitative descriptive with data collection through direct observation, interviews, and questionaire distribution to respondents involved in production process. The study found that the dominant waste categories are waiting, defects, overprocessing, transportation, and inventory. Through current state map analysis and future state map analysis, improvement proposals were obtained in form of implementing reuse molding, workflow arrengement, prekitting application, as well as layout optimization and coordination between processes. The implementation of these improvements was able to reduce nonvalue-added activities and increase production process efficiency. Thus, through value stream mapping has proven effective in improving material productivity in the fiberglass boat manufacturing process
