dc.description.abstractThe relationship between periodontal disease and osteoporosis is still explored. Most published studies support that chronic periodontitis may predispose to osteoporosis which characterized by low bone density, however the mechanism by which chronic periodontitis may contribute to the low bone mineral density is still unknown. In this paper, the potential mechanism that explain the association between chonic periodontitis and the low bone mineral density will be discussed. Because of the low bone mineral density is the implication of unbalanced bone remodeling, it proposed that the periodontal pathogen not only had modulated the host response that could accelerate bone resorption, but also decreased bone formation. The focus on this review is to analyse the action of periodontal bacteria on bone formation disturbance that causing the low bone mineral density based on the clinical, animal and laboratory experimental studies. Better understanding of this correlation may provide useful and beneficial warnings for osteoporosis risk and may prove essential design for intervention strategies to prevent the development and/or progression of disease.en_US
