Background. Periodontitis is an oral disease caused by Porphyromonas gingivalis. Infections caused by P. gingivalis can be cured with chlorexidine gluconate. However, it has side effects in long term usage. Lime leaves (Citrus aurantifolia (Christm. & Panz.) Swi ngle) i s a medicinal plant that contains essential oils which composed by terpenes compound as antibacterial substances. Objectives. The purpose of this study is to determine the antibacterial activity and the optimal concentration of essential oils of lime leaves in against P. gingivalis. Methods. Thi s study was a laboratory experimental with posttest only control group design research. Essential oils were extracted by water steam disti llation in various concentrations of 100%, 50%, 25% and 12,5%. Chl orhexidi ne gluconate 0.2% was used as a positive control. The method used was well diffusion method. Antibacterial activity was shown through the inhi bition zone around the well. Observations diameter of the inhibition zone were done every 24 hours and 48 hours. Results. The results of this study showed that the less concentration of essential oil of lime leaves will produce the less of inhibition zone against P. gingi valis. Conclusion. Essential oil of lime leaves can inhibit the growth of P. gingivalis and the optimum concentration is 12.5%.en_US
