Abstract: English becomes a foreign language in Indonesia which is needed to be learned in secondary schools. The objective of teaching writing of Eighth Grade in junior high school based on school-based curriculum is that the students are able to express meanings in short functional written texts and simple essays in the form of recount and narrative text. In educational issues, it is essential to master writing especially for foreign language learners. Through writing, the learners can convey their ideas, feelings, and thoughts into written form. Based on the result of preliminary study through interview with the English teacher and classroom observation at SMPN 1 Pujer, the researcher could identify some factors that influence the low writing competence of the eighth grade students.
