Background: Periodontal disease is a periodontal tissue disease. The primary etiology of periodontal disease is plaque bacteria, especially in subgingiva. One of secondary etiology of periondontal disease is sex hormone changes which can be found in women who used contraceptive of pill. Purpose: To know the influence of duration in usage of pill contraceptives on amount of colony of subgingival plaque bacteria and severity of periodontal disease. Methods: Research subjects were 30 women of childbearing age according criteria were classified into 3 groups: control group (women who did not use contraception), group II (women who active acceptor of contraceptive of pill for 1-2 years), and group III (women who active acceptor of contraceptive of pill for 2-4 years). Subjects examined their periodontal tissue condition with Periodontal Index (PI) and samples were taken from subgingival plaque which will to be used for count the amount of bacterial colony. Result: The results of LSD test showed the amount of colony of subgingival plaque bacteria between groups showed no significant difference, whereas the individual PI score between groups showed significant differences. Conclusions: It can be concluded that duration in usage of pill contraceptives did not influence amount of colony of subgingival plaque bacteria but duration in usage of pill contraceptives influenced the severity of periodontal disease. The periodontal disease was more severe after two years using pill contraceptives.en_US
