Abstract: Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) occurs during the bone remodeling sequence that is induced by therapeutic mechanical stress. It has been known that some materials and medicines can affect the acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement.Vitamin D and its active metabolite, which is 1,25 2(OH) D3, together with Parathyroid hormone and calcitonin, regulates the amount of calcium and phosphorus levels. The purpose of the study was to observe the effect of Vitamin D towards the acceleration of orthodontic tooth movement. The result of the study showed that supplying Vitamin D (1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol) in the periodontal ligament can accelerate orthodontic tooth movement. Histological examination showed the increase of osteoclast number and resulting in the increase of amount of alveolar bone resorption in the pressure side of periodontal ligament. Other study suggests Vit D3 is bone resorption promoting agent due to its stimulating effect on osteoclast. Vit D receptors showed not only in osteoblast but also in osteoclast precursors and in active osteoclasts. Besides, stimulatory action of Vit D in osteoblast can help stabilize orthodontic tooth movement. In conclusion, the supply of Vit D can increase the acceleration orthodontic tooth movement.
