Abstract: Orthodontic treatment is often contraindicated in chronic diabetic condition, because of its manifestations on periodontal tissues will influence the success of the treatment. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder which increased from year to year. This disease characterized by persistenly raised blood glucose levels (hyperglicemia), resulting from deficiencies in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can affect orthodontic tooth movement through several mechanisms. Hyperglycemia in diabetes will induce the polyol pathway, the production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the activation of protein kinase C (PKC), which will affect the orthodontic tooth movement. By studying the mechanisms of diabetes on orthodontic tooth movement, it will be useful to determine the management of orthodontic treatment for patients with diabetes and predict the complications that might occur.
