Abstract: Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a chronic hyperglycemic condition resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. Activated innate immunity and inflammation are relevant factors in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. Moreover, inflammation, and more specifically proinflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-1 are two inflammatory markers that have been associated with an increase risk of diabetes. In dentistry, there are several conditions associated with diabetes, such as xerostomia, oral candidiasis, as well as periodontitis. It have been reported that the high gingival crevicular fluid secretion of IL-1 β and TNF-α in diabetic patients with periodontal disease.
