dc.description.abstractThis experimental research was intended to know whether or not there was a significant effect of mind mapping technique on writing achievement of the 8th year students at SMPN 3 Balung in the 2011/2012 academic year. Based on the preliminary study, it was found that the English teacher hadn’t used mind mapping technique in teaching writing. writing was taught by using free writing technique. Using mind mapping technique in teaching writing has many advantages. The major advantage of using mind mapping technique is during prewriting activity. Because the main function of mind mapping to help the writer to generate ideas and organize ideas before they start to write. It also helps the writer to see the visual relationship of his ideas. In this research, the researcher used mind mapping technique as the treatments for the experimental group. On the other hand, free writing technique was given or applied to the control group. This research was conducted to investigate the effect of mind mapping technique on writing achievement of the 8th year students at SMPN 3 Balung in 2011/2012 academic year. The respondents of this research were the 8th year students of SMPN 3 Balung in 2011/2012 academic year that were determined by lottery because the result of homogeneity test shown that the respondents wereen_US
