Drawing upon primary and secondary sources, this article examines food security issues. It starts the discussion with a long-term perspective on national food security, followed by discussion on regional food security of the Besuki population, and Javanese and Madurese views on the issue both in the regional and household contexts. Food security was and still is a strategic issue for the rulers in maintaining their political legitimacy. Promoting rice production and developing non-rice based food diversification have been part of the policies disegned to strengthen food security in the farmer-Besuki residency area. But there are mixed views among the population of Javanese and Madurese ethnic origins on the sustainability of food security in their area, and how they could make contribution to theissue either positively or negatively.en_US
