dc.description.abstractThe main objective of teaching English at the University is helping the students to read English textbooks and joumals. This is related to the task of the students to read and comprehend references written in English in their major content-subjects. There is a tendency to develop English for Specific Puiposes (ESP) in the University level, especially on their English reading materials. The available materials for teaching English at the Midwifery Academy of Jember is still limited both at the library or at the market. From that fact, those materials need to be developed based on their field of study. This research and development (R and D) studies were intended to develop a model of ESP reading materials using content-based approach for Midwifery Academy of Jember in the 2004/2005 Academic Year. The developmental design was used in this research. The respondents of the research were the first year’ students of Midwifery Academy of Jember. The instruments used consisting of questionnaires for the students to know their interest and needs of the ESP reading materials, and interview for the English teacher was to crosscheck of the result of questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed and described quantitatively. The result of data analysis was used as the basis of developing a model of ESP reading materials. From those development, the Midwifery’ students had interest and motivation toward the ESP reading materials. Therefore, it is advisable for the English teacher to design such materials in order to fulfill students’ needs based on their field of studyen_US
