| Abstract: | Introduction: Success in prosthodontic care relies on retention, stability, and comfort, which can be enhanced with denture adhesive cream. However, the use of such adhesives may promote the growth of Candida albicans, increasing the risk of denture stomatitis. An antifungal agent is needed to inhibit C. albicans growth, and tobacco leaf extract, rich in flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and triterpenoids, may serve as a potential natural antifungal agent. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of tobacco leaf extract as a denture adhesive cream to inhibit C. albicans growth on heat-cured acrylic. Methods: This experimental laboratory study used 15 heat-cured acrylic resins (10x10x2mm). The samples were divided into three groups: 10% tobacco leaf extract denture adhesive, 20% tobacco leaf extract denture adhesive, and a commercial denture adhesive. The extract was obtained through maceration with 96% ethanol and mixed with the denture adhesive at 10% and 20% concentrations. The acrylic plates were sterilized, immersed in artificial saliva for 1 hour, contaminated with C. albicans for 24 hours, then rinsed with PBS and vortexed. C. albicans growth was measured using a spectrophotometer. Results: The 10% tobacco leaf extract group showed lower absorbance than the 20% concentration, with both showing higher absorbance than the control group. Conclusion: Tobacco leaf extract as a denture adhesive cream inhibited C. albicans growth less effectively than the commercial denture adhesive, with the 10% concentration showing the best results, although still not as effective as the commercial product. |
