Abstract: | Introduction: Traumatic ulcers have a high prevalence of about 83.6%. In general, traumatic ulcers can heal on their own. However, prolonged open wounds on the oral mucosa can increase the risk of infection by microorganisms, so topical medications are needed to prevent secondary infection and accelerate the healing of traumatic ulcers. Bay leaves can be used as the latest alternative to accelerate the healing process of traumatic ulcers because several bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, essential oils, vitamins A, C, E, etc. can act as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidants. In addition, bay leaves have a relatively cheaper selling price and are widely available in nature so that all people can reach them. Purpose: to determine the effectiveness of bay leaf extract on healing traumatic ulcers in Wistar rats. Methods: This study is an experimental study with a posttest-only control group design consisting of 5 groups (KN: placebo gel, KP: oxyfresh® gel, P25: bay leaf extract gel 25% concentration, P50: bay leaf extract gel 50% concentration, P75: bay leaf extract gel 75% concentration). The parameters observed were the diameter and healing time of the ulcer. Results: The 75% concentration bay leaf extract gel treatment group had the fastest healing time. Based on data analysis of traumatic ulcer healing time using the Mann-Whitney U test, there was a significant difference (p≤0.05) between 75% concentration of bay leaf extract gel and all groups. Conclusion: Bay leaf extract gel with 75% concentration is most effective in accelerating the healing of traumatic ulcers. |
