Abstract: | Background: Cancer is the second most common non-communicable disease, with chemotherapy being one of its treatments. Chemotherapy can affect families as they fulfill the five family health tasks. The impact of chemotherapy on families can include both physical and psychological disturbances. These disturbances are considered challenges that lead to a decline in the quality of life of families caring for cancer patients. Objective: To analyze the relationship between coping mechanisms and the quality of life of families of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Baladhika Husada Level III Hospital in Jember. Method: This study employed a quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling, and the sample size was calculated using the G*Power application. The sample calculation results are 67 samples. Data was collected using the Brief-COPE questionnaire and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The data were then analyzed using the Spearman-rank test. Results: There was a positive correlation between problem-focused coping and quality of life (p-value = 0.006, r = 0.306). However, there was no correlation between emotion-focused coping (p-value = 0.205, p > 0.05) and avoidance coping (p-value = 0.131, p > 0.05) with quality of life. Conclusion: The problem-focused coping style had a weak positive correlation, indicating that families of cancer patients who adopt a problem-focused coping style tend to have a better quality of life. However, the absence of a significant relationship between emotion-focused coping and avoidance coping styles with quality of life is likely due to the influence of other mediating factors. |
