Abstract: | Kecombrang flower (Etlingera elatior) has the potential to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, so to maximize the use of kecombrang flower extract in topical use as an antibacterial, a preparation in the form of a hand sanitizer gel is made. This study aims to determine the effect of carbomer 940 base concentration on the physical properties and antibacterial activity of kecombrang (Etlingera elatior) flower extract hand sanitizer gel against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Kecombrang flower extract hand sanitizer gel was prepared in 3 formulas with different concentrations of carbomer 940 base, namely 0.25% (F1), 0.5% (F2), and 0.75% (F3). All formulas were evaluated for physical properties, tested for antibacterial activity using the disc diffusion method, and evaluated for physical stability for 6 cycles using the heating cooling cycling test method. The results of the physical properties evaluation showed that increasing the concentration of carbomer 940 base had an effect on physical properties, namely increasing viscosity, decreasing spreadability and pH. Increasing the concentration of carbomer 940 base decreased the diameter of inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results of 6 cycles of physical stability evaluation showed that F2 and F3 preparations were stable in pH value, spreadability, and viscosity. Formula 1 is stable at pH value, but unstable at viscosity and spreadability. There is a significant difference in the physical stability of kecombrang flower extract hand sanitizer gel before and after heating cooling cycling test. |
