Abstract: This research deals with the alteration of ideology in the adaptation of Philbricks’s novel In The Heart of The Sea: The tragedy of The Whaleship Essex into film by Ron Howard. This research aims to identify and analyze changes in intrinsic elements in the novel-to-film adaptation by creating a table to compare what is different in the adaptation using the theory of Linda Hutcheon (2006). In addition, the theory of semiotics from Roland Barthes (1957) is also used in this study to examine the motives behind the novel and film adaptation of In The Heart of The Sea: The tragedy of The Whaleship Essex would be to explore the reasons and motivations that led to the creation of both the original novel and its subsequent adaptation into the film. This research uses qualitative methods for this study. The qualitative method is used in this study to analyze the data and explain the alteration of ideology in the adaptation from In the Heart of the Sea novel to In the Heart of the Sea film. This data is taken from texts and images by analyzing the changes in prominent intrinsic elements in the novel and the film. This research also focuses on images to find motives for adaptation. The result shows that the ideology of the author are paternalistic leadership, autocratic leadership, and racism whether the ideology of the adapter are autocratic leadership, charismatic leadership, egalitarianism, and social value. The crew's struggle for survival and the harrowing experiences they faced. The theme of survival is a major element in both the novel and the film. Both narratives explore the physical and psychological challenges faced by the crew of the Essex as they try to survive after the whale attack
