Abstract: Instagram is one of Social Networking Sites that allows the students to communicate with others virtually. The purpose of this study is to exploring how the teacher and the students implement Instagram as a collaborative learning environment, and the hindrances the students dealt with during writing activities. The type of research used is explanatory case study research with observations and in-depth interviews. The results of this study were divided into two, namely data on how the teacher and the students implement Instagram as a collaborative learning environment and what hindrances they dealt with during writing activities. The results showed that the teacher divided the writing process into two phases, namely classroom and online forum, meanwhile the students did not use Instagram maximally since there were some hindrances occuring during the implementation, namely group and technology-related hindrances.
