Abstract: | Fires in open or closed environments, such as buildings, can cause severe damage to the victim's body. Identification of victims will be difficult due to exposure to high temperatures when fires occur. In some cases of fire, small pieces such as teeth can be detached and ignored as necessary evidence. The victim identification process can be carried out smoothly with trained experts and appropriate forensic diagnostic devices. Forensic odontologists have an active role in all phases of the identification process. Destroyed body parts or the number of victims of a disaster make the identification of victims more complicated, and it is hoped that forensic odontology can help the identification process. In a fire disaster, it is possible that a victim used dentures. Removable dentures can be made of polymethyl methacrylate, synthetic resins with stainless steel clasps or cast alloy (CoCr) equipped with clasps and backrests attached to natural teeth. Injection moulded thermoplastic materials (such as Valplast) are an alternative to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The purpose of this study was to determine the physical changes in Valplast-based dentures with the acrylic elements in the form of changes in shape, colour and weight. This research method is an experimental laboratory using the pretest-posttest control group design. Valplast-based dentures with acrylic element samples of 4 groups were observed in shape, weight, and colour measurements before and after heating using an oven. The research results on shape change showed that there was a change in shape after heating. The colour change study results showed normally distributed and homogeneous data (p>0.05). The results of the One Way Anova test showed that the average colour change was the same (p>0.05). The results of the weight change study showed that the data were normally distributed, but the data were not homogeneous. The results of the Kruskall-Wallis test showed a significant difference in the change in sample weight (p<0.05). The results of the Mann-Whitney test show a significant difference in changes in sample weight. This study concludes that Valplast-based dentures with acrylic elements changed shape and weight after heating with high temperatures. |
