Abstract: The development of technology has resulted in the existence of social media for example Instagram. Instagram could be utilized as a medium in learning writing process. This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions and the factors that shaped perception focused on novelty, attitudes and experience factor. Descriptive qualitative research was conducted at one of the senior high schools in East Java. To collect the data, I used semi-structured interview of 4 participants. The findings revealed three themes; novelty, attitudes and experience. As the first-time application that the students used in writing English activity, students showed interest and positive respond on it. The students also showed positive attitudes and experience in the use of Instagram in writing English. As a result, positive attitudes, experience, and positive perceive on novelty factor lead the students to have positive perception on the use of Instagram in writing English. Continuous improvement of the use of Instagram as a medium was needed to create interesting and creative learning process.
