Abstract: | Introduction : Fungal infections are responsible for high morbidity rates by reducing the patient's quality of life. Dermatophyte fungi affect approximately 25% of the world's population. Exact data regarding the prevalence of skin diseases due to dermatophyte fungal infections in Indonesia is still limited. The risk factors for increased colonization of dermatophyte fungi in the body are very diverse, one of which is body mass index (BMI). Obesity and overweight conditions are associated with an increase in skin infections due to fungal infections. Farmers are often associated with obesity. The incidence of obesity cases among Indonesian farmers is 21.6%. Previous research conducted in Jenggawah, Jember Regency stated that the prevalence of farmers being overweight and obese was 43.6%. Low attention to the condition of overweight and obesity among farmers poses health risks, one of which is an increase in the incidence of skin diseases due to dermatophyte fungal infections. Objective: To determine the significance of the relationship between BMI and the results of dermatophyte fungal culture among farmers in the Jember Regency. Method: This research is an observational study with a research design using a cross-sectional study design conducted in 10 sub-districts in the Jember Regency. The population in this study were farmers who lived in Jember Regency and had clinical manifestations or suspected fungal infections, while the sample in this study were farmers who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Samples were taken using a multistage random sampling technique. Diagnosis of dermatophytosis uses history, physical examination, and culture. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate. The SPSS test in the study used chi-square. Results: The results of this study showed a significant relationship between BMI and dermatophyte fungal culture results with p value=0.024 (p<0.05). Overweight and obesity is associated with increased colonization of dermatophyte fungi through increased systemic lipid metabolism, increased adipose tissue, and susceptibility to comorbidities. Conclusion: BMI shows a significant relationship with the results of dermatophyte fungal culture among farmers in the Jember Regency with a p value=0.024. |
