| dc.description.abstract | La La Land is a musical film released in 2016, directed by Damien Chazelle and features an iconic scene A Lovely Night. This scene marks the beginning of the closeness between the two main characters, Mia and Sebastian, as they walk up a hill from a springtime party. This research, our aim is to describe and analyze the romanticism within mise-en-scene in building romance in the film. This research combines the theories of mise-en-scene and romanticism to analyze how visual elements in the film contribute to building romance, particularly in the context of the A Lovely Night scene. Research used a qualitative descriptive method, dividing the scene into seven segments based on mise-en-scene aspects and the content of dialogues/lyrics related to it. This research identifies two forms of romanticism present in the A Lovely Night scene: epithymia and paixnidi. Epithymia, a simpler form of romance, dominates most of the segments in this scene. Sebastian’s attempts to approach Mia through dialogue, lyrics, acting, and movement are strongly supported by mise-en-scene. The outcome of this romanticism reflects dreams, appreciation, and boundless opportunities often associated with America (American Dreams). This research provides a deeper understanding of how visual elements in film, such as setting, costume and makeup, lighting, and staging, collaborate to construct a powerful concept of romance within a scene. The conclusion of this research reveals that mise-en-scene plays a pivotal role in shaping the perceived emotional impact of romance on the audience in the A lovely Night scene in La La Land. | en_US |
