Title: The Violated Maxims by Characters in Final Girl Movie Script Based on Grice’s Cooperative Principle

Abstract: The thesis applied Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975) which is used to find out the kind of maxims are violated in the Final Girl movie. Moreover, Khosravizadeh and Sadehvandi (2011) about some reasons speakers violate maxims is used to analyze the reason of the characters on Final Girl movie violating the maxims. The data of this thesis are to be taken by selecting utterances from the Final Girl movie script. It employes Cooperative Principle by Grice (1975) to identify the utterances that violates maxims. Futhermore, the situation and context of the utterances are analyzed to get the interpretation of the scene in the movie. Moreover, the possible reason of character violating maxims are categorized based on the anlysis according to Khosravizadeh and Sadehvandi (2011). The result of this study shows that four types of maxims violation were found as a data in this research. The characters in Final Girl movie often violated maxims in their conversation. It is found by twenty two utterances that were considered as a maxim violation. In addition, this study also tries to anlyze the possible reason why the characters in Final Girl movie violated maxims. It is found that the most reason why character in Final Girl movie violated maxim is to avoid a discussion. There are nine data found in several maxim violation used avoiding a discussion as main reason why the characters in Final Girl movie violated the maxims. The another conclusion is from the utterances that have been analyzed as a maxim of violation in Final Girl movie, people often mean not to answer something efficiently. They sometimes mean to hide or keep something secretly. As a result, they respond less than required or more than required.
