Families of patients with ill conditions that had to receive intensive care had a high level of emotional stress. The critically ill patients became a burden or pressure for their families which would cause anxiety. The families’ anxiety could be affected by internal factors. Internal factors include age, gender, level of education, and caregiving experience. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between demographic characteristics and level of anxiety of patient’s family in intensive care units of dr. H. Koesnadi General Hospital Bondowoso. This study was a correlational research with cross sectional approach. A total of 133 respondents were enrolled in this study using convenience sampling technique. The independent variable was demographic characteristics and the dependent variable was level of anxiety. Data collection was performed by administering questionnaires of demographic characteristics and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-Anxiety). Data were analyzed using chi square test with significance level of 0.05. The results showed that most of families of ICU and ICCU patients experience anxiety which consists of 89 people (66.9%). There was a correlation between gender and level of anxiety (p value = 0.002) and no correlation between other demographic characteristics and anxiety. Anxiety was found to be more apparent on women than men. This study indicates the importance of nurses’ role to give families access to information regarding the patients’ condition and medications to reduce their anxiety. Further researches should investigate other factors that might affect the level of anxiety of patient’s family in intensive room.en_US
