A Case Study of How Junior High School Students Approach Writing Tasks
Abstract
This research aimed at finding out how junior high school students approach writing tasks given by the teacher. This research employed a case study design, and was conducted at one of the state sub-urban junior high schools of Banyuwangi District in Indonesia. The data were collected from three students by using classroom observation and the result was analyzed using the qualitative data analysis method from Creswell (2012). The findings revealed that three students struggled in approaching their writing task and it showed that they sometimes had some similarities and differences in patterns when they approached their task. In addition, all three students also used all the stages of the writing process of Tompskin (1994) in approaching their writing tasks. The students had some strategies during the process in approaching their task. Hence, it was suggested that the English teacher needed to be more creative and innovative in adopting various approaches in teaching writing, especially for his/her future junior high school students, to avoid boredom and to empower their writing competency.
